Commingle material is basically any plastic that comes through our warehouse that becomes contaminated and cannot be sold as a first run product. Because we deal in so many different types of plastics, the material that you are trying to get to could be nearly any type of thermoplastic. We deal in ABS, PC, Nylon, PP, PE, PS, PET, Acetal, PMMA, and various other materials. So, if we have a box of PC, for example, that had an accident with PP, then it would not go out with the other material, and instead be reserved for these loads. Perhaps, we might have a box of PMMA regrind that had some ABS that was mixed in before we bought the material. It, too, would become part of the commingle load. As you can see, the load as a whole will be made up of many types of plastics overall. There are a number of things though, that we try to do to make this easier for you. We try our hardest to identify for you on the boxes and label what the contents are both for the main material and for the contaminant. For any overseas company with separation capabilities this would be a great material. You can get a lot of great material for cheap, and with a little labor and ingenuity, you can separate out the contaminates, and have a very nice end product. We cannot sample from each load or random boxes for our commingle loads. Doing so would be misrepresentative. Here is a list of common household liquids that we use to separate their relative densities, that you may consider for separating.

Plastics do not have a singular S.G., but instead they frequently have a range. Often a plastic will have additives, fillers, colorants, crystalline structural variations, plasticizers, and other chemicals that will change the S.G. by a small amount. This is a reference guide, so please be aware that this is not exact. The way that I figure out which liquid will separate the best is by trying several different liquids in a small cup, one at a time, and then finding which one works for this particular application. Basically through trial and error. The goal is to find a liquid with an S.G. somewhere between the two types of plastics. If you do so correctly, one type will float on the top, while the other will sink.

In my travels to China, I know that many Chinese do their own compounding, by compatibility. For example, I remember one gentlemen using ASA, ABS, HIPS, and SAN all in their general purpose ABS. Being able to blend off contaminated goods in many applications will prevent having to separate at all, when contamination is very minor, or materials are naturally compatible. Below is a chart with processing temperatures. Where you see two polymers with their temperature ranges matching then there is a possibility of blending the two. If blended without any cohesive polymer, this may result in delamination of the surface, a weaker impact strength, and reduced desired properties. A few good cohesive polymers I recommend are Kraton, EPDM, and SBR. They can help to bond the materials together, adding strength to many blends while eliminating delamination in many cases.

What can it be used for?
Anyone overseas who has good knowledge on separation with some experience and a facility. We have sold these loads ongoing to China for around 15 years, with most of our customers buying repetitively. Prospective buyers should also have markets for many types of items, because of the broad spectrum of items in the whole load.
Other information:
Loads will be at least 40,000 lbs ~ 18 MT. This material is sold as is on a "cash and carry" basis.
Successful Test performed
Underneath are a set of pictures of some black ABS regrind and black PE regrind that was mixed together. Obviously, this was not separable by color, so it could not be picked apart. We used a separation of densities and achieved total separation using water. The pictures show the separation in the water glass, the picture of separated materials in the cups, and then a burn test showing the separation between the PE and ABS worked.
